There are voices that instantaneously reveal their identity, melodies that return you immediately to their source, and songs that spontaneously transport you to a specific time and place rich with memory and emotion. All of these qualities and more are embued in the songs and poetry of Donovan.
His music is legend: Catch the Wind, Mellow Yellow, Sunshine Superman, Hurdy Gurdy Man, Season of the Witch, Barabajagal, Atlantis… For decades, these songs have defined an age that ignited an era of revolution, re-birth and renewal that changed the world forever. Then and now, the music of Donovan embodies the essential spirit of that time distinct from the storms and polarity of fashion, politics and power. Within his elegant melodies and moving lyrics flows an eternal energy that is evoked from a place and intention of sacred service to beauty, joy, love, harmony and peace. It is this transcendent quality and the clarity and purity of its expression that makes Donovan so singular among artists and why his music returns us so viscerally to a time of adventure, innocence, hope and promise. On May 5th on HBO, the world will be watching DONOVAN, the internationally acclaimed poet, songwriter and icon of the 60’s & 70’s as he is inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. This summer, the Pacific Northwest will be first in the US to see Donovan perform live at Faerieworlds 2012 on July 27th – 29th at Mount Pisgah in Eugene, OR. An annual celebration of music, art and imagination now in it’s 11th year, the appeal of Faerieworlds, spans generations and welcomes everyone to “Live Their Legend.”
And Donovan’s music is legend: Catch the Wind, Mellow Yellow, Sunshine Superman, Hurdy Gurdy Man, Season of the Witch, Barabajagal, Atlantis… For decades, these songs have defined an age that ignited an era of revolution, re-birth and renewal that changed the world forever. Donovan remains a deeply influential musician to this day. His friend, Graham Nash (of Crosby, Stills, and Nash fame) called his induction “a long time coming,” saying, “I don’t think Donovan has ever gotten the credit that he really, truly deserves.”
Donovan will premiere “The Living Crystal Faery Realm,” a new musical and visual experience that the world will see for the first time at Faerieworlds under the stars at Mount Pisgah. Event co-producer Robert Gould, states that “Donovan’s life, poetry and music profoundly embodies the essential spirit and aspiration of Faerieworlds. There is nowhere in the country where the spirit of Donovan’s music is more vitally alive and well than in Eugene, Oregon.”
For Faerieworlds co-producer Emilio Miller-Lopez, himself a musician, this is a chance to watch and work with an artist mentor. “Donovan’s work has been a major influence on my music from the time I was a teen listening to his beautiful collection, Troubadour, over and over until I wore the cassette out. I am most excited to see and hear him perform his lesser known bardic works from albums like HMS Donovan and A Gift from a Flower to a Garden and to share them with the Faerieworlds community. Donovan is possibly the greatest mythic poet of his generation; his elegant sense of song craft echoes the works of Yeats and Tennyson as much as it does Lennon or Dylan.”
The response to Donovan’s presence at Faerieworlds has been record breaking, with advance sales far exceeding 2011 with still three months to go. Donovan will be joined by an exceptional line up of internationally celebrated bands that include, Niyaz featuring Azam Ali, Baka Beyond, Delhi 2 Dublin, Trillian Green, Brother, Treguenda, Adam Hurst, John Doan, Woodland, SJ Tucker and more.
Tonight is the 2012 induction ceremony for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio. Seminal psychedelic singer-songwriter inductee Donovan, along with several other musical luminaries, will be performing live. In an interview with Billboard Magazine, Donovan revealed some of his plans for tonight’s performance.
“‘Sunshine Superman’, I cannot not play, but I would like to preface it with an acoustic song, probably ‘Catch the Wind.’ We’ll follow with ‘Season of the Witch.’ It looks like Jim James of My Morning Jacket (will join in). We played together at Radio City for the meditation concert and I got on really well with him so I will have the younger generation there.”
For those who couldn’t get tickets to the sold-out performance, the ceremony will be rebroadcast on HBO, May 5th. Of course, if you want to experience the wonder and mystery of a Donovan live performance, all you have to do is travel to Eugene, Oregon and enter the portals to world of Faerie.

Eight years ago at Hornings Hideout in Portland, Oregon, Faerieworlds hosted the long awaited reunion of the legendary Pacific Northwest band, TRILLIAN GREEN. In the years that followed, this trinity of gifted musicians have brought their musical magic to the Faerieworlds main stage and delivered intoxicating performances that have become defining moments within the Realm.
The cascading melodies of Ben’s flute spiral around Christine’s soaring, poignant cello as Jarrod’s exotic array of percussion drives the rhythm: it is simply impossible to stand still. As the music rises and swirls, thousands are joyfully enraptured and dance and dance and dance to TRILLIAN GREEN at Faerieworlds. Join us again and experience their candlelit magic:

Yesterday, on NPR’s Morning Edition, David Barnett talked to members of The Small Faces and singer-songwriter Donovan about how American music influenced their own careers. Here’s what Donovan, who’s headlining this year’s Faerieworlds, had to say.
“It was the drums that I picked up first, and Gene Krupa at Carnegie Hall,” Donovan says. “I thought I’d be Art Blakey.” [...] A number of critics said that Donovan Leitch’s look and sound were a little too reminiscent of his American contemporary, Bob Dylan. But Donovan argues that they were just two singers with common influences from American records. “I absorbed the vinyl of Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Jack Elliott, to Michael McClure and then into the Beat poets, Allen Ginsberg. At campus, we were absorbing that stuff,” Donovan says. “We looked to America.”
Donovan also mentions his use of “holy plants,” saying that “plants have always been used by shamans to enter what is called ‘the inner realm.’ “
The 2012 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony will take place on April 14th, in Cleveland, Ohio. For those who can’t make that historic concert, we here at Faerieworlds are honored and delighted to be able to showcase an artist the Hall of Fame calls a “troubadour who truly captured the imaginations of early Beatles-era fans on both sides of the Atlantic” this Summer on our Main Stage.

Faerieworlds is proud to announce that the shamanic soundcapes of Soriah with Ashkelon Sain have been added to our 2012 Summer lineup. A master Tuvan throat singer, Soriah’s voice is joined with the sound-scapes of former Trance to the Sun guitarist Ashkelon Sain, creating what has been called “a neo-tribal, mystically ethereal, paranormally enrapturing musical experience.” On stage, Soriah mixes elements of Japanese Butoh and shamanic ritual to create an engrossing and magical performance that’s not to be missed.
An enrapturing, neo-ancient, mystically ethereal musical experience. Hypnotic tribal rhythms meld organic darkwave textures with Central Asian instruments and overtone singing. Soriah’s virtuoso Tuvan throat-singing, Central Asian stringed instruments and hand percussion is perfectly melded with the neo-ancient airs of Ashkelon Sain’s exquisite darkwave guitars, celestial electronics, and hypnotizing poly-rhythms. Their critically acclaimed albums have their roots in the ceremonial: ritualism, shamanism, butoh. It is a deeply organic experience, the voice drawing out the primordial spell, touching the earth, reaching for the sky. Captivating percussive sections with driven vocals glide effortlessly across windswept steppes, while otherworldly overtones hang like clouds in a frosted mountain range, all amid deep expanses of slowly shifting, mesmerizing tones. And when the Quetzalcoatl Kundalini of Soriah’s lyrical throat singing fires down the spine, everything goes astral.
There are musicians whose music has become iconic for the Faerieworlds community: upon hearing their songs, you are immediately transported into the Realm. The songs of Tricky Pixie magically mix folktales and myth with traditional and original melodies. Members SJ Tucker, Betsy Tinney and Alexander James Adams are exceptional artists who always capture their audiences heart and spirit with the passion and joy of their performances. And while their gypsy celtic rock roots are clearly evident, listen carefully and you will hear them give traditional themes a modern and deeply insightful twist that is uniquely their own.
Tricky Pixie is one of the bands that always embodies the spirit of Faerieworlds: seeing them – and singing along! – is an essential part of your Faerieworlds experience.
