Faerieworlds is proud to welcome acclaimed violinist Kytami, co-founder of the global-fusion phenomenon Delhi 2 Dublin, now a solo force that bridges classical and modern styles. If a line exists between classical and electronic, between ancient and new age, synthetic and organic, Kytami has sliced them all using only a violin bow… but what more does she need?

Apparently nothing at all, as Kytami has already been dubbed a ‘music revolutionary’ by Whats Up Magazine USA, a ‘violinextremist’ here at home, and has been summoned to bring her violin thunder to audiences as far reaching as Taiwan, Dubai and Berlin.

Through an alchemy of classical, fiddle styles fused with the heavy bass elements of Dubstep and Hip Hop, Kytami has managed to soar above not only the constraints of musical genre and labeling, but has forged a path so bold and unique that it’s taken her alongside groups from Swollen Members to acoustic punk rockers Blackie and The Triumphs and today she is regularly dubbed Canada’s most diverse and engaging fiddle player.

After co-founding the critically acclaimed global-fusion sound-storm Delhi 2 Dublin in 2006 and subsequently co-songwriting them toward international musical success until 2010, Kytami surged forward with her own solo career, bringing the essence of her music to audiences in its purest possible form. The 2012 release of her eponymous full-length solo album made this a reality by combining the far flung elements of Classical Music, Dubstep, and the world that only Kytami knows.

While the release of this new CD caused critics to again go about the business of trying to label that thing that Kytami does, others see the folly in trying. “She does the impossible.” Says festival director Ty Cooke, “She could make you crowd-surf to Pachelbel. People call her a ‘rock-violin pioneer;’ people call her ‘the live show of a lifetime’… I guess they’ll keep trying to name the force that is Kytami but she’ll never let them.” With all this enigma, what can you expect at a Kytami show? Well lets start by straightening that out actually, the girl doesn’t play shows, she detonates dance floors. Whether in front of Delhi 2 Dublin or The PhonoGraff, Kytami is internationally renowned for one thing: she rocks the fiddle like a woman possessed… and the audience dances to match. From Germany to Hong Kong and Joshua Tree Festival to Shambhala, one thing is affirmed at Kytami concerts time and again: If you dare witness this violin diva take the stage, be prepared to wear through not only the soles of your dancing shoes, but perhaps the version of reality you brought to the door.

For the first time since Faerieworlds Harvest in 2011, Woodland will return to the Faerieworlds main stage on Sunday evening July 28th. The band will premiere their new CD “Secrets Told” at the summer festival, and will perform a set of songs both new and old.

An American contemporary of renowned European artists like Faun (who contributed to their most recent album “Seasons In Elfland: Shadows”) and Omnia, Woodland evokes a mystery both playful and dark, taking a trip though the unseen realms buoyed by the secret-spilling harmony vocals of Kelly and Emilio Miller-Lopez. The band’s music features a variety of folk and electric instrumentation, combining ambient and acoustic for an experience of potent live improvisational energy.

Woodland’s new album, “Secrets Told” is a musical journey into mediterranean and classical themes, exploring the folk religion of the old world and the ancient mythos of southern Europe. With the romantic cello sounds of Adam Hurst, and the lyrically rich harmony vocal of Kelly and Emilio Miller-Lopez, the music is emotionally evocative and rich in symbolism and poetic meaning. The band will highlight the new work in their live set, which will draw upon a the musical talents of a potent lineup of Woodland musical collaborators old and new.

Don’t miss this chance to see the band who were there from Faerieworlds beginnings, see Woodland at Faerieworlds this summer.

“Mythical, deep and dark, ambient with a slight jazzy twist. Emilio and Kelly Miller-Lopez have created their own mythical world, a place and a band called Woodland.” – Pagan Radio Network

The band has performed and headlined at events including Trolls et Legendes in Belgium, The Labyrinth Masquerade in Los Angeles, An Evening in Elfland in Glastonbury UK, Earthdance in San Francisco, The Witches Ball in London, The Fairy Ball in Cornwall, England, The Good Faeries/Bad Faeries Masquerades on both US coasts, FaerieCon in Philadelphia and the Faerieworlds events in Sedona, Santa Fe, Los Angeles and Oregon.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpRwJLYVV-c

For many, Woodland represents the musical heart of Faerieworlds.

“I have no explanation for my stunned reaction when vocalist Sonja Drakulich sang her first note at the Vault, other than that this was the first definitive proof I’ve seen that such a perfect voice does, in fact, come from a human being.” — Good Times, “Music Seen”

Stellamara is an internationally acclaimed electro-acoustic ensemble emphasizing passionate rhythms, eastern melodies, dramatic orchestral sections, otherworldly ambience and deep bass grooves. Evolving for over a decade of recording and performing, Stellamara unites world-renowned musicians from diverse cultural backgrounds in a shared devotion for folk and classical music rooted in Turkish, Arabic, Balkan, Medieval European and Persian traditions. Stellamara is regarded as being at the forefront of contemporary world music, giving new life and a fresh, modern expression to the beautiful and mysterious qualities of traditional modal music.

At Stellamara’s core are Sonja Drakulich and multi-instrumentalist Gari Hegedus. Their ensemble includes an all-star cast of musicians: clarinetist Peter Jaques (Brass Menažeri), Turkish percussionist Sean Tergis (MWE), multi instrumentalist Evan Fraser (Dirt Wire) and sound designer and multi instrumentalist, EO (Gamelan X and Brass Menažeri).

Stellamara’s founder and Producer, Sonja Drakulich, was born of Serbian and Hungarian decent and raised in Los Angeles. She sought out the study of Eastern European singing on her own as a young girl, and its expression quickly became, for her, a homecoming. She began performing Balkan and Medieval European music as well as her own compositions at the age of 18. At that time she also began her studies in classical Hindustani and Persian singing, and later continued to expand her voice through Turkish, Greek and Arabic singing. She was adopted as protégé by the legendary Bulgarian vocalist Tatiana Sarbinska at the age of 20, and continued her studies with both Tatiana and the renowned Bulgarian vocalist Tsvetanka Varimezova. She has toured with the Mevlevi Dervishes as a singer and percussionist and has provided music for Sufi gatherings and devotional events around the country. She toured Indonesia in 2006 as part of the Gamelan theater group, Situbanda, where she performed a lead role in a contemporary rendition the Ramayana. Her voice and music can be heard in many independent films and she has been sought after by composers, producers re-mixers, as well as the extraordinary Cirque du Soloeil, for lead roles in their productions. Throughout her successes as performer and producer, and throughout her continued studies, Sonja has maintained a voice that is unique, reverent and exquisite. She is not confined by any one tradition, and uses her voice with the freedom of a soaring musical instrument. In her voice, one can hear her center residing in the devotional aspect of song, as she carries within her a signature passionate and rhythmic style, graced with the delicate ornamentations of Eastern melody.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lkkHtuTdIj4

Gari Hegedus began devoting his life to music with the study of Celtic and Bretagne music. From there he was led eastward into the intense practice and performance of Turkish classical and Mevlevi ceremonial music and he toured with the Mevlevi Dervish Order of America for several years. Gari is widely sought after as a highly accomplished and versatile recording and performing artist. His repertoire and playing styles reach outward from Turkey and Greece into the Arab lands, Iran and India. Gari began his musical career with fiddle and mandolin, and had devoted a decade of his life to the violin before learning of his ancestral Hungarian name, Hegedus, meaning “violinist.” Gari’s main instruments are the oud, violin, saz and mandocello, yet his talent is also proficiently expressed on many other instruments, including the yayli tanbur, sarod and setar. Being largely self taught, with an insatiable drive for the discovery of new depths and intricacies of playing, he asserts a distinctive talent for capturing the delicate essence of traditional music, offering a passionate, heartfelt uniqueness and freedom of expression. As a composer and performer, Gari has developed the art of taksim (improvisation) to a deeply soulful level for which he has become highly recognized. He is co-founder of the beautiful musical duo “Teslim” with violinist and composer, Kaila Flexer.

Famous for their electric performances, Delhi 2 Dublin, dubbed “the United Nations of rock ‘n’ roll,” are heading to the Faerieworlds 2013 Main Stage in their never-ending mission to “electrify the people, to charge up their energy.” A mold-breaking fusion of sounds from across the world, Delhi 2 Dublin merges global rhythms with pounding club beats.

A mix of Bhangra, Celtic, Dub, Reggae and Electronica with global rhythms and club beats, Dehli 2 Dublin take pride in creating a genre-hopping live experience that inspires “a highly charged multi-cultural dance celebration.” Their no-limits style has taken them all over the world to massive acclaim, constantly evolving and changing in the process, or as the band puts it: “Not being able to fit into any specific genre allows the band to create whatever we like and not be judged for it. Our audience expects nothing less.”

“Delhi 2 Dublin is non-stop world beat energy. Where else can you see a purple haired fiddle player rocking out with a kilt-wearing Korean flanked by two bouncing bhangra percussionists and a vocalist who looks like he would be at home in a Bollywood music video? This live performance was all about energy. Delhi 2 Dublin captured the crowd — holding us all hostage. The band couldn’t seem to contain their enthusiasm.” – Oh Snap

Dehli 2 Dublin has become a regular fixture at Faerieworlds, and for good reason. Their cultural and musical mix not only inspires ecstatic reveling, the joy that comes from releasing your inhibitions and dancing, but also mirrors the unique world and spirit created at our events. This band transports you, opens the gates to faerie, and allows for the sublime to take hold.

“Imagine the energy and cultural fervor of a huge Indian wedding party colliding with a bunch of drunken Irishmen dancing on a wooden table with fiddles! Delhi 2 Dublin has created their own niche at the intersection of gritty hip hop and electronic beats, traditional Indian influences and that raw Celtic sound that packs a punch – all of which make you want to get up and dance.” - Evolving Music

Don’t miss Dehli 2 Dublin at this year’s Faerieworlds!

Influenced primarily by Middle Eastern, Indian Raga and European traditions, the original music of Adam Hurst is at once haunting, ethereal, evocative and romantic. Using the cello as a solo melodic voice, Hurst creates passionate and emotive musical poetry that digs straight to the soul.

“Amazing music, sometimes nostalgic, sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes dark and scary, as though you’ve touched some incredibly ancient things, feelings, motifs. The music envelops you, gets you into its strange world, deeper and deeper. It seems like the air gets denser and denser, the world comes to a standstill… until the music stops. And only than you breathe again. Absolutely meditative.” -Chlingui Wingui, Tunis, Tunisia

Adam Hurst has performed throughout the US and in Europe and has been commissioned to compose and perform original work for ballet, belly dance, and contemporary dance. His recordings have been used in independent films, documentaries and art films. Adam Hurst’s compelling live performances are not to be missed. He has released nine CDs of original music. His latest, “View From Within,” is a two disc compilation CD and includes previously released tracks from seven of Adam Hurst’s albums.

“The cinematic feel of Hurst’s moody music is no accident. “My biggest goal through music is to create evocative, introspective sounds which can accompany dream states,” he says. “I want the listener to have visual experiences.” It’s music best listened to with your eyes closed and heart open.” – Brett Campbell, Willamette Week

Commissions include: Broken Sparrow~ a ballet choreographed by James Canfield for the NWPDP, in which Hurst composed the entire score and performed live on stage at the premier. Midnight Waltz~ an original piece for cello and accordion composed for the Portland Vampire Ball. Anima~ an independent feature film by Craig Richardson.

Adam Hurst studied cello at Skidmore College while in highschool and Brown University while in college. He holds a BFA from Rhode Island School of Design (1997). He taught cello at Providence College as an adjunct from 1998-2002.

Be sure to not miss a Faerieworlds musical experience that one reviewer calls “transporting, ecstatic, poignant and achingly beautiful all at once.”

Based in San Francisco, Sharon’s musical foundations are solidly based in her Celtic heritage from which she has evolved her uniquely rich and powerful personal style. The music of Sharon Knight combines a love of antiquity and romance with an affinity for the haunting and melancholy, adds a hearty dash of feistiness, reminding us that we can all see the world through the eyes of enchantment.

Knight is a Celtic folk singer in leather armbands. She plays octave mandolin as if it were an electric guitar and sings as though she means to summon a storm. Her penchant for combining fierce and gutsy bravado with ethereal beauty, a hearty dose of fantastical lyrics, and an obvious love of storytelling has inspired her own musical style, “Neofolk Romantique”. Although her musical foundations are solidly built on her Celtic heritage, Sharon has never been one to hold fast to tradition, preferring instead to look to her roots for inspiration and then chart her own path.

That path often sounds less Celtic and more “Folktales that ran away with the Faeries at the turn of the century and took cover in an old trunk bound for the circus, which was then commandeered by pirates.” She likes it this way.

Sharon’s distinctive voice and striking poetry have won her a loyal following across the country. Together with longtime collaborator Winter, she tours nationally several months out of the year, performing at festivals, masquerades, conventions, cafes, shops and house concerts. Her music has been heard on over 300 radio stations, enjoyed “top 10” status on MP3 and NAR charts, and has captured the attention of major labels and independent labels alike. Her music has been featured in two independent films, “Beatific Vision” and “The Commune”. Sharon and Winter are also the founding members of the gothic tribal folk metal band, Pandemonaeon.

To our ears and hearts, Emancipator stands alone among today’s popular EDM artists. While so many pummel their audiences with body numbing mechanized beats and dissonant screeches and sputters, Emancipator’s ambient sounds lift the audience on rich waves of harmonic melody cradled in atmospheric and sensual rhythms, often accentuated by the perfectly placed strains of violin and voice. His unique downtempo music delights the body and inspires the spirit to join in the dance. And his new CD, “Dusk To Dawn,” may be the best incarnation of his artistry to date.

Emancipator is Douglas Appling, who is joined in the live setting by Violinist Ilya Goldberg. To some, it must seem like this young electronic producer came out of nowhere this year, but those in the know have been following Emancipator since he self-released his first album, “Soon It Will Be Cold Enough,” at the age of 19 in 2006. His agile melodies layered over headnodic, immaculately-produced beats captivated fans across the internet and across the world. “Soon It Will Be Cold Enough” was picked up by Japanese super-producer Nujabes, pressed in Japan and sold 5,000 copies in the first six months. Emancipator landed a Puma sponsorship, gave an interview to Rolling Stone Japan, and even had his song “Maps” played at the Bejing Olympics.
