School and instructor information

Academia Duellatoria was founded in 2001 as a Historic European Martial Arts school. Today it has locations in both Beaverton and Phoenix, OR. We are dedicated to teaching “The Noble Art of Defense” as found in historic manuscripts written between 1300 and 1910 A.D. The school believes that the study of European history and culture is of benefit to everyone and that Martial History provides a unique lens into those studies.

Jeff Richardson began studying Eastern martial arts in 1982, first with Shotokan and then TaeKwonDo. He took up sport fencing in 1986. Jeff began studying historic rapier systems in the early 1990’s. In 1995 he earned his black belt in American Open Style Karate. Mr. Richardson founded Academia Duellatoria in 2000 in Southern Oregon. In 2006 he helped to see John Michael Greer’s translation of Girard Thibault’s renowned work on the use of the Rapier published. In the summer of 2007 he opened Academia Duellatoria in Portland Oregon.

Lt. Col. Retired John Czekala has a long standing interest in Western Military History starting with his instruction in Polish Sabre as a youth in 1961. He developed an interest in Eastern Martial Arts during his extended military time in Asia and continued it’s pursuit upon his return to the US and through college. He achieved his Nidan in Kenpo and studied the art of Iado for ten years as an early member of the North American Iado Society. He has been involved since 1994 with his fellow instructors in what is now Academia Duellatoria. John is a nationally certified archery instructor and is a long standing member of the American Bladesmith Society.
